The right Upwork alternative depends on who you want to do the hiring work. On a marketplace you find, screen and manage the person yourself. On a managed service or an agency, someone else does most of that and you pay for it. This guide compares Upwork with four of its competitors, from sites like Upwork to managed services, for hiring a virtual assistant, using what each one publishes on its own website.

Disclosure: Jobeelink is one of the options compared. We took every detail from each provider's own pages on November 5, 2026, and we write "not stated" where a page does not say. Prices and policies change, so check the provider before you commit. This guide is for business owners hiring an assistant. If you are a freelancer looking for work, it is not written for you.

Key Takeaways

  • The biggest difference between these options is not price. It is who finds, vets and manages the assistant, and who replaces them if it does not work out.
  • Marketplaces and job boards are the cheapest to join but put the most work on you. Managed services and agencies cost more per month and take most of that work off you.
  • A low platform fee is not a low total cost. The monthly price is only part of it: your screening time and the cost of a bad hire count too.
  • Ask every provider for the replacement terms and the notice period in writing before you pay.
What each option publishes, at a glance
  • 0–15%

    Upwork freelancer service fee

Per contract, set by Upwork and paid by the freelancer. Clients pay a separate marketplace fee, and a conversion fee if they move a hire off the platform.

  • $69

    OnlineJobs.ph PRO, per month

A membership to contact workers. You then agree pay with each worker yourself. Premium is $99 a month.

  • $599

    Zirtual entry plan, per month

12 hours of task work a month with a US-based assistant. Unused hours do not roll over.

  • $700

    Jobeelink part-time, per month

    About 20 hours a week. Full-time is $1,400 a month for 40 hours.

Why business owners look for an Upwork alternative

Upwork gives you the widest pool and full control. The cost of that control is your time. You write the job post, read the proposals, interview, test, agree terms, and manage the work. If the person does not fit, you start again.

That is a fair trade for owners who enjoy hiring or who have done it many times. For owners who want to hand over admin work, not take on a second job as a recruiter, it is often the reason they start looking elsewhere. If you want to compare the two ways of working before you choose, our guide to a virtual assistant versus a freelancer covers it.

Upwork: the baseline

Upwork is a freelance marketplace. You post a job or browse talent, and you hire directly. It publishes a freelancer service fee of 0% to 15% per contract, charged to the freelancer. Clients pay a separate client marketplace fee, and a conversion fee if they hire a freelancer they found on Upwork outside the platform. We could not confirm the client fee percentage from Upwork's own pages, so check its current fee page before you budget.

It suits owners who have time to screen and who want the largest choice. It is a weaker fit if you need someone started this week or you do not want to run an interview process.

OnlineJobs.ph: hire direct with a membership

OnlineJobs.ph is a job board where you hire workers directly. Its pricing page lists a free tier that lets you post jobs but not contact workers, PRO at $69 a month ($299 a year), and Premium at $99 a month ($349 a year). It says it charges no salary markup, and that you agree pay with each worker yourself. It also states "we don't pick the people for you" and offers a money-back guarantee if you do not find someone great.

The membership price is low because the platform does little of the work. You still screen, contract, pay and manage. It suits owners who are comfortable hiring directly and want to keep costs down. It is not a managed service.

Toptal: a vetted network built for specialists

Toptal markets its network as the top 3% of freelance talent, says the average time to match is under 24 hours, and says you can work with a new team member on a trial basis and pay only if satisfied. Its hiring page lists developers, designers, marketing, project management, product management, management consulting and sales. It does not list administrative or general virtual assistants, and it does not state rates or contract terms on the pages we read.

It is a strong option if you need a specialist, such as a developer or a senior marketer. If you searched for Toptal alternatives because you need routine admin, inbox, diary or data entry work, this is probably not the right tool.

Zirtual: a managed assistant, US-based

Zirtual is a managed service. It says it handles hiring, vetting, interviewing and management, and that all of its assistants live in the US. Plans start at $599 a month for 12 hours of task work and rise to $899 for 20 hours, $1,199 for 30 hours and $1,699 for 45 hours. It states there is no setup fee and no long-term contract, that cancellation takes effect the following month, and that unused hours do not roll over. If an assistant is not a fit, you can request a different one.

Divide the price by the hours and the entry plan works out to about $50 an hour of task time. That is the price of a US-based, fully managed service, and it suits owners with small, irregular workloads who value that. For a steady 20 hours a week, the cost adds up quickly.

Jobeelink recruits assistants, runs each candidate through six vetting stages, and sends you a shortlist of three to five, usually within 24 hours. You interview them and choose. We handle the contract and payments, and a replacement is available during the guarantee period in your agreement. Part-time starts at $700 a month for about 20 hours a week, and full-time at $1,400 a month for 40 hours, which works out to roughly $8 an hour. Specialized roles such as legal, insurance, medical and automation cost more.

Assistants are recruited globally and matched to your working hours. That keeps cost down, and it is a different trade-off from a US-based service. If you need someone physically in the United States, Zirtual or another US-based provider may suit you better.

The numbers side by side

JobeelinkVetted shortlist, contracts handledFrom $700 a month part-time, $1,400 full-timeRecruiting, vetting, contract and payments. Specialized roles cost more

The prices are not like for like. A $69 membership does not include a worker's pay, while a $700 plan includes the assistant's time. Compare the total monthly cost for the hours you need, not the headline number.

Fiverr and Freelancer.com: two more Upwork competitors

Fiverr and Freelancer.com are the best-known Upwork competitors and work on the same marketplace model: you browse listings or post a job, and you check each person yourself. If you came looking for Fiverr alternatives, the same trade-offs apply. We could not read their current fee tables, so we have not compared their prices here. If you consider them, the questions to ask are the same as for Upwork: what the platform charges you, what it protects if the work goes wrong, and who replaces the person.

How to choose in four questions

Match your situation to an option
  1. 1

Do you enjoy hiring and have time to screen?

    A marketplace or job board

Upwork or OnlineJobs.ph give the widest choice at the lowest platform cost, and the work is yours.

  2. 2

Is your workload small and irregular, and must the person be in the US?

    A managed US-based service

Zirtual-style plans cover a fixed number of hours a month. Check the hours and the no-rollover rule.

  3. 3

Do you need a specialist, not general admin?

    A specialist network

Toptal lists developers, designers, marketers and similar roles. Confirm the role you need is offered.

  4. 4

Do you want a steady part-time or full-time assistant without running the search?

A vetted shortlist with contracts handled

That is the model Jobeelink uses. See pricing and the roles you can hire.

What it really costs to hire on your own

A cheaper platform is not always a cheaper hire. Count the hours you spend writing the post, reading proposals, interviewing and training, and multiply them by what an hour of your time is worth. Add the cost of a hire that does not work out: the weeks of lost work and the search you run again. A platform fee of a few percent is small next to either.

That does not make marketplaces a bad choice. It means you should price your own time before you decide. For a longer breakdown of what assistants cost, read how much a virtual assistant costs, and for a wider comparison of agencies, see the best virtual assistant companies.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can't find what you're looking for? Our hiring team is happy to walk you through the details.

It depends on how much of the hiring work you want to do. OnlineJobs.ph keeps costs low but you hire direct. Zirtual is managed and US-based at a higher hourly cost. Jobeelink sends a vetted shortlist and handles the contract and payments. Pick by who does the work, not by price alone.

Websites like Upwork split into marketplaces (Fiverr, Freelancer.com), job boards where you hire direct (OnlineJobs.ph), specialist networks (Toptal) and managed or agency services (Zirtual, Jobeelink). The best fit depends on how much of the screening and management you want to do yourself.

The membership is a flat $69 or $99 a month, and it states it charges no salary markup. But you still pay each worker directly and do the screening and management yourself. Compare the total monthly cost for the hours you need, including your own time.

Toptal is built for specialists. The roles it lists on its hiring page are developers, designers, marketing, project management, product management, management consulting and sales, and it does not list general administrative assistants. For routine admin work, other options fit better.

Zirtual publishes plans from $599 a month for 12 hours of task work, which is about $50 an hour, with a US-based assistant. Jobeelink publishes part-time from $700 a month for about 20 hours a week. The services differ in location and model, so compare what each includes.

Upwork charges freelancers a service fee of 0% to 15% per contract. Clients pay a separate client marketplace fee, and a conversion fee if they hire a freelancer found on Upwork outside the platform. Check Upwork's current fee page for the exact client percentage before you budget.

Hire directly if you have time to screen and manage and you want the widest choice. Use a company if you want someone else to find, vet and replace the person. Our guide to a [virtual assistant versus a freelancer](/resources/blog/virtual-assistant-vs-freelancer) covers the trade-offs.
